Not every chip or crack means you need a new windshield — but some signs shouldn't be ignored. Here are 6 clear indicators that it's time for a replacement.
1. Cracks Longer Than 6 Inches
Short cracks can often be repaired, but once a crack exceeds about 6 inches, repair isn't reliable. The crack will continue to spread — especially in Houston's heat — and the structural integrity of the glass is already compromised.
2. Cracks in the Driver's Line of Sight
Even small cracks directly in your field of vision are dangerous. They distort your view of the road and can create blinding glare from sunlight or oncoming headlights. Repair resin can also cause slight distortion, which is why replacement is often the better option for driver-side damage.
3. Multiple Chips or Cracks
One or two small chips can be repaired. But if your windshield has three or more areas of damage, the glass is weakened overall. At that point, replacement is safer and more cost-effective than multiple repairs.
4. Edge Cracks (The Sneaky Danger)
Cracks that start at the edge of the windshield are the most dangerous and urgent. Edge cracks compromise the seal between the glass and the frame, which affects structural integrity, can cause water leaks, and spread rapidly. If you have an edge crack, don't wait — get it replaced as soon as possible.
5. Pitting and Hazing
Over time, sand, dust, and road debris cause tiny pits in your windshield. You might not notice individual pits, but collectively they create a hazy, worn look that reduces visibility — especially when driving into the sun. If your windshield looks foggy even after cleaning, it's time for a new one.
6. Previous Repair That's Failing
Windshield repairs don't last forever. If a previously repaired chip is turning white, developing new cracks, or separating, the repair has failed and replacement is needed.
